Types of Cables
Cables are used as media in networking. Many types of cable are used in networking such as UTP (Unshielded Twisted Pair) STP (Shielded Twisted Pair) Coaxial Cable and Fiber Optic cable. In Ethernet mostly two types are used UTP and STP. Other two types are rare to use cause of expense.
Twisted Pair: Eight cables made of copper with pair of four cable twisted, that's why its called twisted cable. Telephone cable is example of twisted pair cable although it contain only one pair.
Basically its prevent crosstalk and electromagnetic induction over network. Its most common used cable in LAN because its least expensive cable.
Shielded Twisted Pair: Shielded twisted pair is special cable used for telephone in business class. An outer shielded is added to old twisted pair cable. Only reason why outer shield used for providing ground. This shield also help to protect external interference to cable. It also provided safety to cable. Its used in token ring network. It is expensive but it provide higher rate transmission for longer distances.
Unshielded Twisted Pair: The most commonly used cable in network because it least expense. There are also different categories CAT3 to CAT5. The differentiation factor twists per foot. Less number of twist per foot means less quality and higher number of twists means higher quality. 100BaseT for example allows maximum length segment 100 meter. 100BaseT stands for: 100 Data transmission rate,B for Baseband transmission and T for twisted pair. CAT3 is less quality compared to CAT5.
Coaxial Cable: Coaxial cable is a cable that contain inner conductor and it also two outer shields tubular insulation layer surrounded by tubular conductor shield.
This cable is widely used by the television industry but it also used by computer networks such as Ethernet. It is much expensive than telephone cable or twisted pair cable. It also provided more sensitive for interference can take a lot of data. RG 6 is most commonly used coaxial cable in both residential and commercial used. RG 6 is double shielded cable 6.86 mm diameter with central conductor.
